New Zealand began the three-match T20I series against host India with a strong 21 run win in the opening game at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Friday night.

Asked to bat, New Zealand finished on 176 for six in their 20 overs and in their response India finished on 155 for nine in their 20 overs.

Earlier, New Zealand began well with their openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway adding 43. Then there was a 60 run stand between Conway and Glenn Phillips for the third wicket. Conway finally fell for 52 off 35 balls with seven boundaries and a six.

Towards the end Daryl Mitchell struck some lusty blows as he rallied the lower order. In the end New Zealand finished on 176 for six in their 20 overs. Mitchell remained unbeaten on 59 off 30 balls with three boundaries and five sixes. For India the best bowler was Washington Sundar (2-22).

In their response India lost their top-order cheaply. They were struggling at 15 for three. Then captain Hardik Pandya added 68 runs for the fourth wicket with vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav (47). But then wickets fell again regularly as India's young middle-order lost its way.

Sundar top-scored with 50 off 28 balls with five boundaries and three sixes. India finally finished on 155 for nine in their 20 overs. For New Zealand the two best bowlers were Lockie Ferguson (2-33), Michael Bracewell (2-31) and Mitchell Santner (2-11).

The second game of the series will be played on Sunday at Lucknow.
