India raced to a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka with a 67 run win in the opening game at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.

After being asked to bat India posted 373 for seven in their 50 overs and in response Sri Lanka finished on 306 for eight in their 50 overs.

India started off well with their openers captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill adding 143 runs for the first wicket. Gill was the first one to fall for 70 off 60 balls with 11 boundaries. Then, Sharma fell soon after for 83 off 67 balls with nine boundaries and three sixes.

Virat Kohli then added 90 runs for the fourth wicket with KL Rahul. Towards the end Kohli reached his 45th ODI hundred as he finished on 113 off 87 balls with 12 boundaries and a six. India ended on 373 for seven in their 50 overs. For Sri Lana the most successful bowler was Kasun Rajitha (3-88).

In their response Sri Lanka was reduced to 23 for two. Then Pathum Nissanka added 72 runs for the fourth wicket with Dhananjaya de Silva. Nissanka finally fell for 72 off 80 balls with 11 boundaires. Sri Lanka slipped from 161 for four to 179 for seven.

Captain Dasun Shanaka held firm for a while as he first added 37 runs for the eighth wicket with Chamika Karunaratne. Towards the end Shanaka added 100 runs for the ninth wicket with Kasun Rajitha. Shanaka finished unbeaten on 108 off 88 balls with 12 boundaries and three sixes. Sri Lanka ended on 306 for eight in their 50 overs. For India the best bowlers were Umran Malik (3-57) and Mohammed Siraj (2-30).

The second ODI will be played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, 12 January.
