India v SL 2nd Test Day 1: India take charge in an action-packed day
The first day of the second and final Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was an action packed one on Saturday.
In all 336 runs were scored and 16 wickets fell on the opening day.
India after opting to bat posted 252 in 59.1 overs and in their response Sri Lanka were tottering at 86 for six in their 30 overs when stumps were drawn.
Earlier, India lost their openers cheaply. Then Virat Kohli and Hanuma Vihari shared a 47 run third wicket stand. But then both Kohli and Vihari fell in quick succession. Thereafter, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer took charge of the innings. Both Pant and Iyer shared a 40 run fifth wicket stand.
After Pant fell, Iyer took charge of the innings. He shared good stands with Ravichandran Ashwin and then Axar Patel.
Towards the end Iyer used the long handle to good effect as India were finally bowled out for 252. Iyer was the last man out for 92 off 98 balls with 10 boundaries and four sixes.
For Sri Lanka the wicket-takers were Lasith Embuldeniya (3-94), Praveen Jayawickrama (3-81) and Dhananjaya de Silv (2-32).
In their response, Sri Lanka were tottering at 28 for four and then 50 for five. Angelo Mathews held the innings together with a disciplined 43 off 85 balls with three boundaries and two sixes.
But the other batters did not offer any resistance as they were done in by excellent India bowling.
For India the wicket-takers were Jasprit Bumrah (3-15), Mohammed Shami (2-18) and Axar Patel (1-21).
India made one change to their XI bringing in Patel for Jayant Yadav, while Sri Lanka made changes to their team as they brought in Jayawickrama and Kusal Mendis.
