9:46 p.m. IST being the cut off time, the umpires had no option but to call off the match. The good thing though is that the fans will not have a long wait as the action begins in Indore on Jan 7.

It had been two weeks since India played their last international match and the fans were excited with international cricket commencing again. Everything looked good till the toss which India won and decided to bowl first.

India went in with three pacers- given that dew had already set-in in Guwahati - in the form of comeback man Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini. Sri Lanka too picked three proper pacers and two spinners while leaving out Angelo Mathews.

However, just a few minutes before the start of play, it began drizzling. With the rain stopping after a short while, it was expected that the match would more or less start on time.

But, another bout of rain came down. This time, it was quite heavy and the ground had to be covered.

Once rain relented, patches on either side of the pitch appeared which had a big say in deciding the fate of the match. Vacuum cleaners and super soppers being employed, the rest of the ground had dried out but 9:46 p.m. IST being the cut off time, the umpires had no option but to call off the match.

The good thing though is that the fans will not have a long wait as the action begins in Indore on Jan 7.
