Batting first, India scored a competitive 324-5 Rohit Sharma 87, Shikhar Dhawan 66 and MS Dhoni 48* the stars with the bat. Lockie Ferguson 2-81 and Trent Boult 2-61 picking up the wickets for New Zealand.
In reply, New Zealand were bundled out for a disappointing 234, in just over 40 overs - Doug Bracewell 57 top scoring and Kuldeep Yadav 4-45, Yuzvendra Chahal 2-52 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2-42 doing the damage with the ball for India.
