Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of the Test series in Zimbabwe after failing to recover from a calf injury.

The 29-year-old all-rounder sustained the injury during the fourth One-Day International against Australia in August and has failed to be fit in time for the series.

With vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal already out of the original squad due to a thumb injury, the selectors have named veteran left-arm-spinner Rangana Herath as the captain for the Test series against Zimbabwe.

Herath, 38, has been a vital cog of Sri Lankan bowling department ever since the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan and will now become the oldest player to lead the Test team for the first time.

In his 73-match Test career, Herath has picked 332 wickets which includes 26 five-wicket hauls and six 10-wicket hauls.

The selectors have not yet announced the replacement for Mathews, who also remains doubtful for the tri-series involving Zimbabwe and West Indies.

The two-match Test series between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will kick-off on 29th October in Harare.
