The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)  has announced the dates for the 2017 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament.

The tournament will commence on 5th April - six days after India's home Test series against Australia concludes and will end on 21st May - 10 days before the Champions Trophy 2017 in England.

Both the tournament opener and the final will be played at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium which is the home ground of the defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad.

According to a report from ESPNCricinfo the decision on the dates were taken during the recent governing council with a hope that the schedule will get the necessary approval from the Lodha Committee.

Another stiff challenge for the BCCI will be to ensure the matches in the upcoming season will not be moved out of Maharashtra due to water drought problems.

"We will have water harvesting technology at stadiums in Maharashtra to counter drought threat in the state," IPL chairman Shukla said after the meeting.

"We will ensure that we can generate our own water to maintain stadiums."

The 2016 edition of the IPL saw eight teams competing but in the end it was David Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad that defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final to claim their maiden title.
