IPL 2018: Match Preview Kings XI Punjab vs Delhi Daredevils
The last time these two teams at the same venue, the Delhi Daredevils (DD) were shot out for 67 and slumped to a ten-wicket loss. With a much more experienced batting order this time, they will be looking for a better performance as they take on the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) for the second match of IPL 2018.
The stage will be set for Ravichandran Ashwin to showcase his captaincy skills to go along with his leg spinners! It also marks the return to home for one of India’s finest limited overs cricketers – Yuvraj Singh. The stakes would be high for both as they look to force their way back into the Indian limited overs squad. While the chances look bleak for Yuvraj, Ashwin still has age on his side to harbor hopes of a recall.
Gautam Gambhir is never far away when it comes to talks of a recall and while he too might be past his India playing days, he is certainly looking forward to representing his home state. If this were to be a battle of captains, Gambhir would have won this contest hands down given his wealth of experience.
While the Punjab outfit looks fit and raring to go, Delhi suffered a setback when their pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada got ruled out due to a back injury. The good part for them is the fact that they have Trent Boult in their wings and was in tremendous form in the recently concluded test series against England.
Should they get a chance, this fixture provides an opportunity to under-19 stars Manjot Kalra and Prithvi Shaw to prove their mettle on the big stage. The batting though would largely depend upon the trio of Gambhir, Glenn Maxwell and Shreyas Iyer. It remains to be seen if Rishabh Pant can be explosive and consistent at the same time this season. Punjab will be hoping that Mayank Agarwal can carry on his tremendous domestic form and along with KL Rahul, can lay a strong platform for the likes of Aaron Finch, Yuvraj Singh, David Miller and Marcus Stoinis.
The Punjab bowling will depend on the guile of Andrew Tye and Ashwin with more conventional operators rallying around them. Delhi on the other hand will rely on the class of Boult, the pace of Chris Morris and Mohammed Shami and the seasoned leg spin of Amit Mishra.
While it would be a difficult one to predict as to which way the match would go, Delhi seem to have bases covered better than Punjab and have their noses slightly ahead!
