Chennai Super Kings were least expected to upset the applecart in the opening encounter of the much awaited IPL 2020. But in the very first match, Super Kings inflicted a five-wicket win over defending champion Mumbai Indians to start their campaign in style.

Mumbai Indians, the most organised side of the tournament, were asked to bat first and struggled to post 162 for nine in their 20 overs. Only Quinton de Kock (33: 20b, 5x4) and Saurabh Tiwary (42:31b, 3x4, 1x6) managed to play any kind of meaningful knocks. The rest of the batting just did not have any answers in the face of some tight bowling by Super Kings. For Super Kings the best bowlers were Lungi Ngidi (3-38), Deepak Chahar (2-32) and Ravindra Jadeja (2-42).

The chase for Chennai Super Kings was shaky as they lost their openers Shane Watson and Murali Vijay quite cheaply. Then a 115-run stand between Faf du Plessis (58 n.o.: 44b, 6x4) and Ambati Rayudu (71: 48b 6x4, 3x6) for the third wicket revived the chase. In the end, Curran with 18 off six deliveries applied finishing touches to the chase. None of the Mumbai Indians bowlers could exert any control over the Super Kings chase.
