IPL 2020 Match 16 Preview: DC vs KKR - After blip against SRH, Delhi ready to battle Kolkata's newfound recipe of success
Delhi had been going well in IPL 2020 with victories in both their first two matches until they lost their way in the last encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Delhi need one of Dhawan or Shaw to fire consistently
When Delhi openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan fire, the team looks like a different setup altogether. However, Shaw and Dhawan need to be a bit more consistent for Delhi to have a big impact on the tournament.
It is not as if the team does not have the ability in the middle order to soak up the pressure and then go hard at the bowlers. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant have shown that they are capable of that as well.
But, when the team does not get off to a good start, the duo has to play in a manner contrary to their natural game, which is not ideal. If either of Dhawan or Shaw can score a few runs, and score them quickly, it will allow the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Shimron Hetmyer and Marcus Stoinis to go from strength to strength.
The Ashwin dilemma
Ravichandran Ashwin is back to practice following his shoulder injury in Delhi's first fixture of the tournament. Delhi now have a selection dilemma. Veteran leg spinner Amit Mishra, who is the second-highest wicket taker in the IPL history, has bowled brilliantly in the couple of games that he has got and it would now be hard on him to get replaced.
With Ashwin being the premier spinner for Delhi, Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer would want him to return. More than replacing Mishra, there is a possibility of Ashwin coming in the side in place of Axar Patel to maintain the diversity in their spin department as well.
Kolkata's new recipe for success
Kolkata have found the recipe for success in the last couple of matches. Rather than the option of going in with a specialist batsman at number 7, which Kolkata tried in their first match of the competition, perhaps keeping in mind how rusty the batsmen were, the team has now packed themselves with bowlers.
Chakravarthy and Russell great value additions
Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Shivam Mavi, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Kamlesh Nagarkoti make for a delicious buffet. If you include Nitish Rana as well, who can bowl some handy spin, Kolkata have a total of eight bowling options which gives them great flexibility.
If someone like a Kuldeep Yadav or a Shivam Mavi is not firing on a particular day, skipper Dinesh Karthik can easily bowl them for just two overs and then share his load by throwing the ball to Andre Russell.
Here's the probable playing XI of both teams:
Delhi Capitals (DC) - Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin/Amit Mishra, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) - Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Eoin Morgan, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Shivam Mavi, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Kamlesh Nagarkoti
