IPL 2020 Match 34 Preview: DC vs CSK - Overhauled Chennai face well-oiled Delhi at Sharjah
Chennai Super Kings played a different brand of cricket to register a 20-run victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad but they face points table leaders Delhi Capitals next, which will be a tough opposition to counter.
CSK finally show intent
Intent, which has been the most talked about word when it comes to Chennai Super Kings, was finally on show in their last match. It was a master stroke when the Chennai Super Kings management decided to promote all-rounder Sam Curran to open the batting alongside Faf du Plessis.
Chennai batting order looks better after Curan experiment
Anyway, the likes of Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Jadeja were not getting to play enough deliveries with Chennai losing consistently and it made sense for Chennai to spread out their resources.
Shane Watson had to shift to one down which is not that bad a ploy, given that he has the power game and is capable of clearing the field comfortably even when the powerplay is over.
With Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni in at number 4 and 5, the move lengthens CSK's batting line-up. They then have players like Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur to use the long handle.
Chennai's bowling is looking quite balanced. In the last match, they went into the game with as many as seven bowling options, so much so that Chawla got to bowl just one over. Shardul Thakur and Dwayne Bravo have taken up the job of bowling at the death and have been doing a commendable job.
Sam Curran shone with both bat and ball in the last game and is emerging as a crucial player for Chennai. They are expected to stick to their experiment, but it would be interesting to see how Curran tackles the pace and quality of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Tushar Deshpande while opening the batting.
Delhi hopeful of Pant's return
At the top of the table, Delhi Capitals do not have a lot of reasons to worry. But their balance has certainly been disrupted with the injury to Rishabh Pant. However, the wicket-keeper batsman was seen taking rounds of the field in their last game and can be declared fit for this match.
It will then allow Delhi Capitals to bring in Shimron Hetmyer in place of Alex Carey and replace Rishabh Pant with Ajinkya Rahane. If Pant needs one more match to fully recover, Delhi will go in with the same playing XI.
Nortje and Dhawan come good
Anrich Nortje made headlines by bowling the fastest ball of IPL 2020 in the last match. Shikhar Dhawan, with a rapid half-century, and debutant Tushar Deshpande were equally good for DC.
