IPL 2020: Stoinis exploits leads DC to a thrilling win in Super Over

In just the second match of the tourament, Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 saw its first-ever tied contest. In the match on Sunday evening, Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab the winner had to be decided via a Super Over. Finally, Delhi Capitals came back from the dead to seal an opening win.

Asked to bat first, Delhi Capitals struggled to post 157 for eight in their 20 overs. They lost wickets early on. It required a 73 run fourth wicket stand between captain Shreyas Iyer (39: 32b, 3x6) and Rishabh Pant (31: 29b, 4x4) to revive the innings. Thereafter, there was a middle-order collapse. It required a late order from surge from Marcus Stoinis when he struck 53 off 21 balls with seven boundaries and three sixes to provide the impetus to the innings. In fact in the last three overs Delhi Capitals struck 57 off the last three overs.

For Kings XI Punjab the key wicket-takers were Sheldon Cottrell (2-24) and Mohammed Shami (3-15).

The chase for Kings XI Punjab was shaky. They lost wickets at regular intervals. Mayank Agawrwal carried his bat right through to finish on 89 off 60 balls with seven boundaries and four sixes. He shared a crucial 56 run seventh wicket stand with K Gowtham (20:14b, 1x4, 1x6).

Kings XI Punjab lost their way, losing two wickets off the last two balls to take the match into Super Over.

For Delhi Capitals the best bowlers were Kagiso Rabada (2-28) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2-2). Ashwin had to leave the field with a shoulder dislocation.

In the Super Over, Punjab lost their way and it became easy for Delhi Capitals to seal the deal in the end.
