IPL 2021: Delhi gives perfect birthday gift to captain Pant

Delhi Capitals consolidated lead at the top of the points table with a three-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at the Dubai International Stadium, thereby giving a perfect birthday gift to captain Rishabh Pant.

On Monday night, Chennai after being asked to bat posted 136 for five in their 20 overs. In their response, Delhi Capitals chased down the target in 19.4 overs with three wickets to spare to finish on 139 for seven.

Earlier, Chennai struggled in their innings as they were reduced to 62 for four. It required a 70 run fifth wicket stand between Ambati Rayudu (55 n.o.: 43b, 5x4, 2x6) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to revive the innings. In the end Chennai ended at an underwhelming 136 for five in their 20 overs.

For Delhi the chief wicket-taker was Axar Patel (2-18).

In their response, Delhi had a stop start approach as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Opener Shikhar Dhawan (39) was waging a lone battle as middle-order failed to deliver yet again. Captain Rishabh Pant, debutant Ripal Patel tried very hard to stem the rot, but it was too little too late.

Later, Shimron Hetmyer (28 n.o.) managed to repair the chase. He added 36 runs for the seventh wicket with Axar Patel as Delhi achieved the target in 19.4 overs to finish on 139 for seven.

Earlier, Patel made his debut in place of Steve Smith for Delhi, whereas Chennai brought in Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Robin Uthappa in place of Sam Curran, KM Asif and an injured Suresh Raina.
