Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field first. Ruturaj Gaikwad lost his wicket early on as he mistimed a flick to the point fielder. Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali just cut lose from there on and made full use of the power play overs.

They stitched a partnership of 108 runs for the 2nd wicket and put Chennai Super Kings right on top. After Mooen Ali fell, a couple of wickets fell quickly in the middle order but Ambati Rayudu took responsibility to take Chennai to a formidable total. He made 72 off just 27 deliveries to take the team's total to 218 for 4 in 20 overs.

Chasing 218, Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma started off quite well and put on a stand of 71 runs for the 1st wicket. Both Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav perished in quick succession. Quinton de Kock was the next one to follow the suit and Mumbai Indians suddenly found themselves in a big trouble.

Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard steadied the ship with their stand of 89 runs for the 4th wicket. Pollard simply went berserk and smashed the bowlers for maximums at ease. After Krunal lost his wicket, Hardik joined hands with Pollard and approached the target swiftly.

Despite wickets falling, Pollard held one end intact and smashed an unbeaten 79 off 32 balls to take Mumbai Indians home by 4 wickets.
