IPL 2021 Phase Two: Punjab defend modest target, buck losing trend
Punjab Kings finally bucked their ill-luck to successfully defend a modest target against Sunrisers Hyderabad and thereby register a narrow five-run win.
At the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Punjab Kings after being asked to bat posted a modest 125 for seven and in response, Hyderabad fell short by just five runs to finish on 120 for seven.
Earlier, Sunrisers remain unchanged. Punjab made three changes leaving out Fabien Allen, Ishan Porel, and Adil Rashid, while bringing in Ravi Bishnoi, Chris Gayle and Nathan Ellis.
Punjab's innings was anchored by useful scores by captain Lokesh Rahul (21) and Aiden Markram (27). There were useful contributions all through but noone made any substantial contribution at any time during the innings.
For Hyderabad Jason Holder (3-19) was the best bowler on view.
The chase for Hyderabad never really took off as they lost wickets at regular intervals.
Wriddhiman Saha (31) tried to hold the innings together, but the others just caved in without a fight. A brief 32 run sixth wicket stand between Saha and Holder (47 n.o.) raised hopes for Hyderabad, but it proved to be too little too late.
Holder tried to take maximum strike towards the end and even struck a six in the final over, but simply could not take Hyderabad across the line. Hyderabad finished on 120 for seven.
For Punjab the key wicket-takers were Ravi Bishnoi (3-24) and Mohammed Shami (2-14).
