IPL 2022 Match 59: Mumbai register impressive win in low-scoring encounter
Mumbai Indians registered an impressive five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night.
Asked to bat, Chennai was bowled out for 97 in 16 overs and in their response Mumbai finished on 103 for five in 14.5 overs.
Earlier, Chennai innings got off to a faulty start as no DRS was available for the first two overs of the innings because of a power cut at the Wankhede Stadium. Chennai lost three wickets in the first two overs. Thereafter even as DRS was restored, Chennai lost wickets at regular intervals. They were 29 for five and then 39 for six. But for a 39 run stand between captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (36 n.o.: 33b, 4x4, 2x6) and Dwayne Bravo. The tail did not contribute much as Chennai was bowled out for a mere 97 in 16 overs. For Mumbai the best bowlers were Daniel Sams (3-16), Riley Meredith (2-27) and Kumar Kartikeya (2-22).
In their response, Mumbai were progressing well at 30 for one, when they suffered a collapse. Mumbai was reduced to 33 for four. Then a 47 run fifth wicket stand between Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen revived the chase. After Shokeen fell for 18 with the score on 81, Varma carried the chase forward. In the end Mumbai achieved the target in 14.5 overs to finish on 103 for five. Varma remained unbeaten on 34 off 32 balls with four boundaries. For Chennai the best bowler was Mukesh Choudhary (3-23).
