Three teams – Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals (renamed) and Rajasthan Royals – have completed their squad with 25 players while others are yet to pick a few players. For instance, Kolkata Knight Riders have a squad of 21 players but they also have a purse of Rs 6,05,00,000 remaining, which they could utilise to pick more players in the recent future.
The player salary cap was increased this year from Rs 660 million to Rs 800 million, giving the franchises a cushion to go a mile further for their desired players. And guess what, the franchises did not disappoint.
Uncapped players Varun Chakravarthy (Rs 8.4 Cr), Shivam Dube (Rs 5.0 Cr) and Prabhsimran Singh (Rs 4.8 Cr) were the talk of the town as they went big with their first IPL contract.
Jaydev Unadkat, who was the joint most expensive player last year, went to Kings XI Punjab for Rs 8.4 crore this year. KXIP also broke the bank for young English all-rounder Sam Curran who bagged Rs 7.2 Cr to become the most expensive foreign player in this auction.
After going unsold initially, veteran Yuvraj Singh was later bought by Mumbai Indians at his base price of Rs 1 crore. However, some other big guns like Alex Hales, Brendon McCullum, Hashim Amla, Angelo Mathews and Corey Anderson found no takers.
