Joe Root turns down IPL offer
England vice-captain Joe Root has made himself unavailable for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 tournament to spend time with his newborn son.
The 30-year-old has a prolific record spread across all the formats and his performance in the World T20 in India last year would have surely attracted wide offers from various franchises.
Root had earlier delayed his departure to India ahead of the ongoing One-Day International series to be at the birth of his child.
The Yorkshire star admitted it was disappointing to miss out on what would have been his debut season in IPL considering a proper international window in place during that period. However, he insisted that his priority will remain with his family.
"It is a shame because there is a really good window in the international calendar to play. But looking at the schedule, especially next winter, I am going to be away for long periods," Root said.
"This will be a great opportunity to spend time at home and watch (son) Alfred grow up a little bit. A lot of great things would come from the IPL, a lot of great experiences and I am sure it would help to improve my game.
"But at the moment being at home is my priority and I want to make sure I do not miss out on that. It is quite tough being away in these early days so it will be nice to catch up."
The 2017 edition of IPL will kick-off from 15th April.
