Philander (2-27) dismissed both the Durham openers Stephen Cook (0) and Keaton Jennings (5) cheaply while Jordan (2-11) accounted for Cameron Steel (14) and Graham Clark (16) to reduce them to 41 for four before Paul Collingwood (31 not out) and Ryan Pringle (18 not out) added an unbeaten 56 run stand to keep their hopes live.
Earlier, Sussex started the day at 452 for four after marathon knocks from Luke Wells (258) and Stiaan van Zyl (149).
Van Zyl added just eight runs to his overnight score before being dismissed but Burgess (76) added a 58 run stand with David Wiese (30) to help Durham reach 550 but it was Archer's (70) 68-ball knock that ensured they finished the innings at 668 with a massive first innings lead of 381 runs.
