Former England Women’s Cricket Captain and President of The Lady Taverners, Rachael Heyhoe Flint OBE DL, presented a cheque for £32,304 at Lord’s yesterday (Tuesday 7 July) to ECB Head of Women’s Cricket, Clare Connor OBE, and England Women’s Cricket Vice Captain, Nicky Shaw. The cheque represents funding for The Lady Taverners Girls Under 13 and Under 15 Indoor and Outdoor Cricket Competitions for the 2009/2010 season. Since the Lady Taverners sponsorship was introduced in 2003 more than 30,000 girls from over 3,000 schools and clubs have taken part in The Lady Taverners Indoor and Outdoor club competitions. Rachael, Clare and Nicky were joined at the Lord’s presentation by pupils from Alperton Community School, some of whom took part in this year’s Under 13 competitions. Rachael Heyhoe Flint said: “This is a wonderful year for women’s cricket and I am so proud, as President of The Lady Taverners, that we have been able to sponsor competitions for girls cricket at U13 and U15 levels – both indoor and outdoor – for seven years. The numbers of girls who have played in The Lady Taverners competitions since our sponsorship began is very pleasing; we are certainly giving young girls a sporting chance to play cricket!” Clare Connor said: "We are absolutely thrilled with the impact that The Lady Taverners Competitions is having on the participation rates of girls playing cricket across the country. With indoor and outdoor tournaments at Under 13 and Under 15 levels, we have seen an overall increase in participation of 58% on last year with over 30,000 girls having taken part since the competitions began. Hundreds of schools and clubs have embraced the competitions through their County Boards and we are excited about the even greater potential in the coming years. On behalf of all those schools and clubs, I would personally like to thank The Lady Taverners for their support."
