With U19 Cricket Fever set to hit the country this week , Central Gauteng Lions congratulate the Imperial Lions Cubs (U19) squad. They were crowned champions of the 13th annual Cricket South Africa (CSA) Cubs Week in Stellenbosch after comfortably defeating the VKB Knights by seven wickets in the final.

The Imperial Lions cubs’ side were not able to call on regular players namely Levert Manje, Odirile Modimokoane, Bryce Parsons and Khanya Cotani who are currently with the South African under 19 World Cup squad.

In their absence Michael Copeland scored 98. He deserved a century for his impressive knock but fell to the bowling of Reeza Alexander two runs short of the milestone. Copeland struck six fours and six sixes as he took the game away from the Knights with some aggressive batting.

Copeland shared a 158-run partnership with Nick Halstead-Cleak (73*) for the third wicket. Halstead-Cleak was the glue that kept the batting line-up together whilst also keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Opening batsman Taheer Isaacs (52) also contributed towards the victory with his half-century.

The team coaching staff included Braydon Dixon (Head Coach – CSA U19 National Talent Scout), Bongani Ndaba (Assistant Coach – U15/U17 Central Gauteng Lions Framework Coach) and Wynand Schmitt (Assistant Coach – North West U19 and Academy Coach). The CGL U19 and Academy coach Siya Sibiya is also normally part of this coaching staff but was on national duties with the South African U19 side where he is currently assistant coach during the current ICC U19 World Cup.

“The Imperial Lions Cubs team won the annual Cubs week, winning all five of their matches against some of the best players in the country. We are very proud of the boys, their hard work not only during the tournament but throughout the year has yielded great results. Every player contributed at different times to ensure the success of the team. As a coaching unit we pushed the players and each time they delivered for us. We are very proud of the players and management that made such incredible results possible. Thanks to everyone at CGL and North West for their support,” says Braydon Dixon.
