July 1, Sri Lanka v West Indies, 39th match, 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street

Although Sri Lanka are still mathematically alive to make the semifinals, there is not much relevance of the match between Sri Lanka and West Indies. West Indies have already been officially knocked out of the Word Cup.

Sri Lanka's campaign has suffered a huge blow after a loss in their last match against South Africa. The Lions had raised hopes after a valiant win over England, but they retracted in the match against the Proteas which was played at the same venue, at the Chester-le-Street in Durham.

The Sri Lankan batting order collapsed once again and could put up only 203 runs. In reply to which, on the back of a solid partnership between Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis, South Africa won the game easily by nine wickets.

West Indies were in the race despite a string of defeats but after they lost their last match against India by a big margin of 143 runs, they have lost even a semblance of a chance of moving head.

West Indies are currently placed at the second last place with only one win from seven matches. One of their matches was washed out due to rain, as a result of a which, the team has three points. Three notches below them are Sri Lanka. With two wins from seven matches, they have lost three games, but courtesy of the two washed out matches, they have six points.

The surface did not seem to have a lot of demons in the match between South Africa and Sri Lanka and is likely to play well. In which case, West Indies will back themselves to win this match.

Let's have a look at the probable playing XI of both teams:

Sri Lanka- Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Kusal Perera (wk), Avishka Fernando, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Thisara Perera, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Milinda Siriwardana, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga

West Indies- Chris Gayle, Sunil Ambris, Shai Hope (wk), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (c), Carlos Brathwaite, Fabian Allen, Kemar Roach, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas
