Marlon Samuels wins WICB cricketer of the year award

West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels was picked as the cricketer of the year in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) annual awards function in Antigua.

Samuels, who was West Indies’ highest run-getter in 2015 in the One-Day International format with 601 runs from 15 matches, also took home the ODI cricketer of the year award.

The 35-year-old was also the man of the match in the final of the 2016 World Twenty20, where West Indies beat England to claim their second title in the shortest format.

Meanwhile, Darren Bravo, who scored 644 runs from nine Test matches in 2015, won the Test player of the year award.

Swashbuckling opener, Chris Gayle was picked as the T20 player of the year while all-rounder Dwayne Bravo won the Caribbean T20 player of the year award.

Stafanie Taylor, who led the West Indies women’s team to their first World Twenty20 win earlier this year was named as the Women’s player of the year and also won the Women’s ODI and T20 player of the year.

Shimron Hetmyer, who was the captain of the West Indies Under-19 team in the victorious ICC U-19 World Cup campaign, was presented with the U-19 player of the year award.

Jomel Warrican, the left-arm spinner, who made an impressive Test debut against Sri Lanka in October 2015, took home the emerging player of the year award.
