Young quick Jordan Buckingham was a bright light on a tough third day for the West End Redbacks, claiming four Victorian wickets to take his match tally to seven.

The day belonged to Victoria however, who amassed a 424-run lead on the back of a century to skipper Pete Handscomb, before declaring with twelve overs remaining in the day, a stanza of play which South Australian openers Jake Weatherald and Henry Hunt were able to safely negotiate.

 

Match Analysis

 

- Resuming play with ten wickets in hand, Victoria lost Will Pucovski LBW for just nine to a well-aimed Wes Agar delivery that had the sent the umpire’s finger to the sky.                

- Marcus Harris and Pete Handscomb then began to build a partnership, which was broken by David Grant when the air had accrued 51 runs.

- Victorian captain Handscomb was the star – belting 132 runs from 183 deliveries to wrestle his side into full control of the game.

- Buckingham claimed the wickets of Handscomb, Matt Short, Sam Harper and Will Sutherland to finish with seven wickets for the match, just his second Marsh Sheffield Shield appearance. 

- David Grant, Wes Agar and Nathan McSweeney all finished with one wicket apiece. 

- South Australia will begin day four with the score reading 0/38, chasing 425 for victory.

 

Speaking post play, Head Coach Jason Gillespie was positive ahead of day four -“We’re here to win this game of cricket and that will be the plan. We understand it will be a challenging chase on day four, but we’re here to win games of cricket.

“I thought Jordan ran in hard the whole game. He’s bowled 47 overs for the match, and he was really impressive. Wonderful effort from him and he as rewarded with seven wickets. But I thought all the fast bowlers ran in hard today and gave it their all. I can’t fault the effort of the lads. 

“We know it will be a challenge tomorrow but you have to be positive and that is certainly what we will be doing.”
