New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill has been ruled out of the second One-Day International against Australia in Napier after sustaining a hamstring injury.

The 30-year-old suffered the injury while fielding in the first game in Auckland which the Black Caps managed to win by six runs despite a brilliant all-round effort from Marcus Stoinis.

New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson confirmed the news on Guptill and is hoping for him to recover before the third game in Hamilton.

"Martin felt tightness in his left hamstring while fielding yesterday and after being monitored over the last 24 hours it's become apparent he won't quite be ready for Napier," Hesson said.

"He'll remain with the team and we'll continue to monitor him ahead of the third ODI in Hamilton."

Northern District batsman Dean Brownlie has been named as the replacement for Guptill for the second game of the series.

Brownlie has played 10 ODIs for New Zealand previously but his last appearance came way back in December 2014.

Having won the first game in Auckland, New Zealand will look to wrap up the series when they lock horns with Australia in the second game in Napier on Thursday.
