The last time these two teams met, the match turned out to be a one sided affair. With Gujarat Lions (GL) struggling to climb up from the bottom and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) strengthening its position at the top, a repeat of the previous game could well be on the cards. The Knight Riders have had a hat-trick of wins and have been invincible at home which makes it even tougher for the Lions.
A struggling and unlucky Trent Boult made way for Nathan Coullter-Nile who impressed immediately by picking up three wickets against his former team, the Delhi Daredevils. What was impressive though was the maturity with which Manish Pandey played and took KKR over the line in a tense situation. Yusuf Pathan also made a vital contribution after Gautam Gambhir endured a rare failure.
Gujarat’s woes continued this season as they ran into a Gayle storm. Very few teams recover once they run into that storm and Gujarat will be thanking the Gods for AB de Villiers’ absence in the last game. This time round, they won’t have to contend with Chris Lynn who took them apart in the first game. While their batsmen have consistently put up decent totals, their bowlers have conceded far too many runs for their liking. Even the number one ranked test bowler, Ravindra Jadeja went for 57 off his four overs against Bangalore.
A home game for KKR, the supreme batting form of Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Pandey and Yusuf to go along with some disciplined bowling make Kolkata favourites to win this tie and make it 2-0 this season against the Lions.
