In fact, in the first 6 matches played at the venue in the first half of IPL 2020, the team batting first scored over 200 runs on four occasions, with the lowest first innings total being 184.

The slow Sharjah

However, the square in Sharjah was relaid just before the beginning of IPL 2021. As a result, the batters have found it hard to score freely at the notorious venue.

In the third match played at Sharjah in this phase of the IPL between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, Delhi could only manage 127 from their 20 overs and Kolkata chased it down with 10 balls to spare.

Clearly, batting second on the surface is a better option. The batters will have to play straight down the ground rather than trying to find boundaries square of the wicket.

Spin to win

At the same time, spinners will play a major role in the match. Both Mumbai and Delhi have a few quality spinners in their ranks.

Delhi will go in with three spin bowling options in Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav. All of them are able to use the slowness of the pitch to their advantage.

Mumbai have Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya who turn tough customers to hit with some assistance from the surface.

Smith, Tiwary, Coulter-Nile get another chance

Delhi have had to make a forced change with Prithvi Shaw injuring himself. Steve Smith is likely to partner Shikhar Dhawan at the top of the order.

Mumbai Indians replaced Ishan Kishan with Saurabh Tiwary and the experienced middle order batsman did a fine job for the side. Nathan Coulter-Nile also impressed as he joined the Mumbai XI in place of Adam Milne and will retain his spot.
