Moeen Ali took three wickets and then scored a 21-ball half-century as England began their tour of Sri Lanka with a 56-run win over Sri Lanka A on the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Ali's haul of three for 29 restricted the Sri Lankan side to 198 for six from 43 overs in an innings that was shortened by rain.

England were then set a revised target in 41 overs but were fast closing in on the Sri Lankan score in just 25 overs when play was suspended.

Ali hit six fours from first over he faced, from Vishwa Fernando, and went on to make 56 in 37 balls as he and Alastair Cook (54 in 62) put on 94 for the first wicket.

Ian Bell (16 not out) and Joe Root (15 not out) were guiding England towards a comfortable victory and at the point when play was called off, they only needed 90 to have won on the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Earlier, Steven Finn (2-43) and Ben Stokes (1-15) were the other wicket-takers for England as Sri Lanka A failed to build on Kusal Perera's 56 in 74 balls.

Jeevan Mendis hit an unbeaten 42 and Ramith Rambukwella was not out on 30 to add some late runs but they were still well short of a challenge that would have challenged England.

The two sides meet again in two days.
