The road to the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England started in Belfast with the Netherlands beating Kenya by 19 runs in the opening match of the Qualifying tournament. After Ryan ten Doeschate hammered 56 from 45 balls, the Netherlands posted 153 for five and then restricted Kenya to 134 for nine from their 20 overs. The Netherlands, who were distinctly under par during the recently-concluded European Championship Division One, got off to a good start with openers Darron Reekers (29) and Eric Szwarczynski 28 in a quick opening stand of 52. ten Doeschate came in and smashed one four and three sixes in his innings. Pick of the bowlers for Kenya was spinner Hiren Varaiya, who returned figures of two for 24 by removing both opening batsmen. Kenya lost wickets throughout their run chase, ten Doeschate taking three for 27 and Edgar Schiferli three for 23. Steve Tikolo top scored with 37 from 33 balls but only Thomas Odoyo, with 17, offered his captain any support as Kenya's bid for their second successive appearance at the finals suffered an opening day jolt. © Cricket World 2008
