Newton Poppleford Cricket Club is a friendly side based in East Devon, which formed in 2003. Cricket had been played in the village in the 1980s under the name ‘Riverside’, but folded in the 1990s, after playing many years of league and friendly cricket.

The newly formed team decided that playing league cricket would not be in our best interests.

We have been playing 20/20 and 40 over games since 2003, and always encourage the classic values of the game. The game is always played in the right spirit, and the result is not important (unless we are facing Tipton in the local derby). Although cricket is the main concern of the club, late night gatherings at the local pub following the match are of equal importance.

Senior members who have made considerably efforts towards the maintenance of the club include Kenneth Clay, First XI captain and former groundskeeper Richard Coombs, vice-captain of the First XI and website maestro, Matthew Raistrick, club chairman and Ed Thomas, senior treasurer.

Significant appreciation must be shown to our first chairman, David Jeffery and Kenneth Clay, for without them; we would have nothing to do on Sunday afternoons.

The only league cricket we do immerse ourselves in, is indoor, and our luck has not been very high. However, the club has developed a knack for 6-a-side cricket, a tournament comprised of a number of local clubs. We won the first tournament in 2011, and returned to win again in 2012 and 2013.

The team is mainly made up of people from the local area, but we have been known to take in foreigners! Like many clubs, we encourage generations to play for the club. Currently, we have 4 father and son duos, and 2 trios. The club welcomes any player who loves the game, no matter their ability.

Every home and away game ends up in a pub of some sorts. The club is indebted to our local pub and sponsors, The Cannon Inn, who provide free food after the game and a wide selection of alcoholic beverages.

We welcome any touring side to our idyllic ground. All we ask for is a good game, a bit of fun, a love of good teas and enjoyment of beer!
