NZ v India 3rd ODI: Rain has the final say, New Zealand claim ODI series

New Zealand claimed the three-match ODI series against India 1-0, after the third match was called off with two overs still to be bowled to complete the mandatory 20 overs at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Wednesday.

Asked to bat, India was bowled out for 219 in 47.3 overs and in response New Zealand was at 104 for one in 18 overs with two overs still to be bowled for it to be considered an official ODI. New Zealand was ahead by 50 runs on the DLS method when persistent rain washed out the play.

Earlier, India started off cautiously as their openers captain Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill put on 39 for the first wicket. Later, Shreyas Iyer held the innings together. He shared crucial stands with Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav. Iyer stood tall as he made 49 off 59 balls with eight boundaries. Washington Sundar then took charge of the innings towards the innings. Sundar made an efficient 51 off 64 balls with five boundaries and a six. In the end India finished on 219 in 47.3 overs. For New Zealand the successful bowlers were Daryl Mitchell (3-25), Adam Milne (3-57) and Tim Southee (2-36).

In their chase, New Zealand openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway got off to a smart start. Together the openers Conway and Allen added 97 for the opening wicket. They dismantled the inexperienced Indian pace attack as they made merry on some indisciplined bowling. Allen was the only man to fall as he made 57 off 54 balls with eight boundaries and a six. Shortly thereafter rains disrupted the match and the play never started again. New Zealand was 104 for one in 18 overs with two overs still to be bowled for it to be constituted a match.

New Zealand's Tom Latham was named player of the series.
