Overnight rain renders outfield unfit for play on day three
South Africa 263 (Amla 53) v
New Zealand 15-2 (Guptill 7)
First Test, day three, Durban
Overnight rain at Kingsmead in Durban left the outfield wet and unsuitable for play, eventually forcing the umpires to abandon play on the third day of the first Test between South Africa and New Zealand.
Heavy overnight rain left the outfield water logged, which prevented a timely start. The umpires initially scheduled an inspection at 12:00 local time.
Despite the sunny weather, the ground did not dry fast enough and another inspection was scheduled by the umpires two hours later.
Eventually, the umpires were not satisfied with the conditions and were forced to call off the day’s play as there were too many wet patches on the outfield.
