India received an injury scare ahead of the upcoming 2016 Asia Cup after their captain MS Dhoni suffered from a back spasm prompting the selectors to name Parthiv Patel as the backup.
In an official media release, the Board of Control for Cricket in India revealed that Dhoni picked up the injury in training but did not divulge further details.
“India ODI and T20I captain MS Dhoni has suffered a muscle spasm in the back during a training session today in Dhaka," said the release.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Parthiv Patel as the back-up wicketkeeper for the upcoming Asia Cup, 2016. He will join the team in Dhaka at the earliest.” The 30-year old has been scoring well in domestic cricket, standing out as the second highest run getter for Gujarat in their victorious campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with 295 runs from eight games.
In the 2015-16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Patel was the third highest run getter with 337 runs from nine games at an average of 42.12 including four fifties.
However, Patel’s last international appearance for India was in February 2012 in the One-Day International against Sri Lanka in Brisbane.
India begin their 2016 Asia Cup campaign with their first game against Bangladesh on 24th February at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
