Pat was speaking after day two of the intra-squad match in Southampton involving the leading Australian red-ball cricketers.

The match serves as a prelude to selection of the squad for the Ashes series against England, with the first Test due to take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham from 1 August.

Day two of the match was again dominated by the bowlers with 15 wickets falling after 17 on day one.

The side coached by Graeme Hick, resuming at 7-96, was eventually bowled out for 120 with Pat Cummins (5-24) and Peter Siddle (4-31) serving as wreckers-in-chief. That gave the Hick side a first innings lead of 15 and was followed by Brad Haddin’s line-up making 170 in its second innings.

Warner top-scored with a fighting 58 in 144 minutes while Will Pucovski (37), Alex Carey (26) and Marcus Harris (15) were the only other players in double figures. Mitchell Marsh was the star with the ball, capturing 5-34, while James Pattinson again looked dangerous (3-19) and Chris Tremain chipped in with the other two wickets to fall (2-27).

Chasing 156 to win, the Hick side finished the day at 2-35, anchored by an unbeaten 25 from Cameron Bancroft.
