Peter Handscomb joins Australia squad in India as cover for injured Aaron Finch
Victoria batsman Peter Handscomb has been added to the Australian squad for the upcoming five-match One-Day International series against India that begins on 17th September.
The decision follows after opening batsman Aaron Finch is struggling with a calf injury that kept him out of the tour game against Indian Board President's XI last week.
The 30-year-old first sustained the blow during his stint with Sussex and now a scan revealed that he might miss the initial few matches for Australia.
The news was confirmed by team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris, who also revealed that Finch will remain with the squad in India.
"Aaron re-aggravated his pre-existing calf injury during warm-up at training yesterday," said Kountouris.
"He has had a scan in Chennai and although we believe it is not a serious recurrence, he will not be available for the first few one-day matches here in India.
"He will remain with the squad whilst we assess the injury and establish his return to play timelines."
Uncapped all-rounder Hilton Cartwright opened the batting in the tour game in Chennai but was dismissed for a second ball duck. The team management might also ponder opting for Travis Head to open the innings along with David Warner.
