Bangladesh chances of levelling the ongoing Test series against New Zealand has suffered a major blow after skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and opening batsman Imrul Kayes have been ruled out of the second Test in Christchurch.

Rahim, who scored 159 runs and was involved in a record breaking 359-run stand with Shakib Al Hasan in the first innings of the Wellington Test is suffering from a hairline fracture to his thumb.

In the second innings, Rahim was forced to retire hurt on 13 after he was hit by a bouncer from Tim Southee after which he did not return back as Bangladesh succumbed to a seven-wicket defeat despite scoring 595 runs in their first innings.

Meanwhile, Kayes struggled with a thigh strain while batting in the second innings. Even though, he came to bat later on, he was unable to move freely.

Uncapped wicket-keeper batsman Nurul Hasan is likely to replace Rahim while Soumya Sarkar is expected to take the place of Kayes.

Meanwhile, Mominul Haque will also miss the game with a fractured rib and uncapped Nazmul Hossain Shanto is in line to make his debut.

Tamim Iqbal will lead the side for the second and final Test which begins on Friday with Bangladesh trailing 0-1 after their seven-wicket defeat in the Wellington Test.
