Sri Lanka will miss the services of veteran spinner Rangana Herath for the third and final Test against India in Delhi due to a sore back.

The 39-year-old bowled a total of 39 overs in the only innings India batted in the Nagpur game and managed a solitary wicket but will now head back to Sri Lanka on Thursday.

According to Sri Lanka Cricket chief selector Graeme Labrooy, Malinda Pushpakumara was originally considered as a replacement for Herath but the 30-year-old failed the fitness test leading to the selection of leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay.

"We were hoping that Rangana Herath will feel okay for Delhi. But having spoken to him and physio we feel that he should come back," said Labrooy.

"We have got lot of cricket ahead and he is important for us. Our plan was to fly in Malinda Pushpakumara, but he has failed a fitness test. Vandersay will now be the replacement".

Vandersay has played 11 One-Day Internationals and seven Twenty20 Internationals for Sri Lanka previously but is yet to make an appearance in the longer format of the game.

The third Test will be played between 2nd and 6th December with India having gained a 1-0 unassailable lead following their innings victory in the second game in Nagpur.
