Rangpur Rangers beat Sylhet Thunder by 38 runs in the 32nd match of the BPL 2019/20 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet today.

Match Summary

Sylhet Thunder 161-9   (Mohammad Mithun 40, Sherfane Rutherford ; Lewis Gregory 2-27, Mustafizur Rahman 2-18, Taskin Ahmed 2-39)

Rangpur Rangers 199-5 (20 Ovs) – (Mohammad Naim 42, Shane Watson 68, Cameron Delport 25; Monir Hossain 1-25, Sherfane Rutherford 1-28, Ebadot Hossain 2-30)

Result – Rangpur Rangers won by 38 runs

Sylhet Thunder won the toss and decided to field against Rangpur Rangers, favouring the chasing option.

Asked to bat first, Rangpur Rangers got off to a flier with Mohammad Naim 42 and Shane Watson hitting an opening partnership of 77, before Mohammad Naim was out in the 9th over. At 104 – 1, after 12 Overs, with Shane Watson and Cameron Delport going strong, it seemed as if the Rangers would put on a big score.

However, with score on 138, the Rangers lost both Watson (68) and Delport (25) and the innings’ stuttered.

Lewis Gregory and Mohammad Nabi then partnered up and moved the score on nicely to 161, before Gregory was out for a quickfire 15. Rangpur Rangers ended up on 199-5 with Mohammad Nabi out in in the final over for 23 - Monir Hossain 1-25 (off 4 overs), Sherfane Rutherford 1-28 and Ebadot Hossain 2-30 were the pick of the bowlers for Sylhet Thunder. Krishmar Santokie went for a disappointing 1-56 off his 4 overs.

In reply, Sylhet Thunder made a good fist of the run chase and while Mohammad Mithun 40 and Sherfane Rutherford 60 were in, an elusive win for Sylhet seemed a distinct possibility.

However, it was not to be as wickets fell regularly and the impetus slowed – and when Sherfane Rutherford was run out for 60 (with both feet off the ground, although he had made the crease) any hope of victory had gone.

Rangpur Rangers won by 38 runs and Sylhet Thunder stay rooted to the bottom of the BPL points table and now out of contention, whilst the Rangers can still make the playoffs but will need to continue this winning streak.
