Sunday's match between Upminster CC and Essex CCC attracted a record crowd to Upminster Park and saw Alastair Cook's Essex XI win a high-scoring contest by one run.

Essex scored 327 with Cook scoring 80 from 45 balls being well supported by Jaik Mickleburgh (63), Nick Browne (56) and Ben Foakes (50). For Upminster Under-16 player Max Carter-Miller took three for 42.

In reply Upminster ended a run short despite Shabhaz Butt’s 61 and some late six-hitting by Anthony Alberti. Cook took three wickets for 74 runs in seven eventful overs.

A huge thank you must to go Alastair Cook who entered into the spirit of things throughout the afternoon.

The England captain did not turn down an autograph or photo request all afternoon and we hope everyone in attendance was able to get the signature or photo they wanted!

Alastair's county colleagues also played their part in a wonderful occasion and also Neil Foster from Alastair's Benefit Committee for his part in making this game take place.

Everyone at Upminster Cricket Club hopes Alastair's charities benefited from the occasion and we wish Alastair and Neil all the best with all the other events they have planned for 2014.

We must also thank our sponsors for their assistance in helping to make sure this match, and all past Benefit Matches, take place.

Without their assistance we would not be able to stage these games.

And finally to the Upminster public and all local cricket fans for coming to the game. Everyone at Upminster Cricket Club takes great pride in being able to host these games, and in seeing hundreds (thousands this year) of spectators line the boundary of the hallowed Upminster Park ground.
