The West End Redbacks have begun their Marsh Sheffield Shield season on the front foot, claiming nine Victorian wickets on day one at Karen Rolton Oval today.

Key Points

  • Redbacks skipper Travis Head won the toss and elected to field.
  • Before the first ball, fast bowler Harry Conway received his baggy red cap ahead of his first Shield game for SA from Peter Gladigau, while Henry Hunt received a fresh cap from Jake Weatherald to mark his 25th first class appearance.
  • Conway got a wicket in his first over, getting Will Pucovski caught behind for a duck.
  • Each member of the four-man pace attack got a wicket in the first session and Victoria went into lunch 4/56.
  • Alex Carey took his fourth catch in the second session, the only wicket Victoria lost in that stanza of play. At tea, Victoria were 5/137.
  • David Grant got the breakthrough after tea, Marcus Harris getting caught in the deep for 85.
  • Will Sutherland continued where Harris left off, compiling a maiden first class ton.
  • The day finished with the scoreboard reading 9/264

SA fast bowler Jordan Buckingham spoke after play:

“It was [looking good at lunch], we were obviously pretty optimistic. I think the wicket was pretty bowling conducive and it was a good toss to win. To let them get as many, we are probably a little disappointed there, but all-in-all – 9 for 260, you’d probably call it even.

“I was probably a little bit short with the new ball I thought, probably could have done a little bit more damage there but overall pretty happy. First hit out, so it’s nice to get a few out the way.

“[Sutherland] was outstanding. I think he summed the conditions up perfectly. He played the ball pretty late, no faults. I think he batted really well.”

Entry is free at Karen Rolton Oval for the remaining three days of the match, with play starting at 10:30am.
