New Zealand XI 227-8 dec. (Rutherford 61) v
West Indians
Tour game, Lincoln, day one

Opener Hamish Rutherford scored 61 as a New Zealand XI declared on 227 for eight against the touring West Indies on day one in Lincoln.

With many of the West Indians still in India, where they lost the third and final One-Day International in Kanpur, their side was made up of six New Zealanders but they fared well enough to almost bowl the 'home' side out.

Rutherford made 61 in just 49 balls after Peter Fulton (1) and Dean Brownlie (6) missed out on opportunities to spend time in the middle ahead of the Test series by falling to Sheldon Cotterell and Shannon Gabriel respectively.

Rutherford's counter-attack included 12 fours and he was supported by Tom Latham (27) and Brendon McCullum (22), the latter back in action after returning home from the Bangladesh tour with a back injury.

Derek de Boorder (4), Mark Craig (24) and Todd Astle (30) were the other wickets to fall and the declaration came with Anurag Verma unbeaten on 31.

Gabriel, Cottrell, and Sam Wells took two wickets apiece.

The opening Test between New Zealand and the West Indies begins in Dunedin on 3rd December.
