Sale CC enjoy day in the sun
Sale Cricket Club enjoyed a day in the sun on Saturday as both teams completed comfortable wins in the Cheshire County Cricket League.
When the sun is out the normal script is to win the toss and bat first, as Warrington dually elected to do in the 1st XI clash at Walton Lea.
Hive Projects sponsored Sale hadn’t read the script and their bowlers soon made inroads with home captain Ashley Scholes trapped LBW by Tyrone Lawrence with the score on 10.
Spinner Isaac Brooks then took the next 3 wickets to reduce the score to 36-4.
Amlyn Layton and Rich Adams then look 2 wickets each before Lawrence returned to complete innings best figures of 3-10 as Warrington were shot out for 72.
Sale made hard work of the reply losing 4 wickets for the addition of 38 runs, before Dan Newton steadied the innings with 28.
When he fell, Sale needed just 2 to win, leaving Brooks to hit the winning runs.
The 2nd XI match at Dane Road followed a similar pattern, despite visitors Heaton Mersey making a confident start.
After adding 44 runs for the first wicket, they then lost both openers on that score. This was followed by 4 more wickets falling with the score on 66, led by skipper Gareth Watterson (3-11).
Young spinner James Dodds also joined the attack as he took 5-9 to complete the rout as Heaton Mersey subsided to 107 all out.
Sale reached their target with ease after young openers Dodds and Theo Brodbeck added 41 for the first wicket. They both fell within 2 runs of each other, but there was no wobble for the home team as Jamal Benzafar and Joe Cannon saw Sale to their target.
Sale’s own ‘master blaster’ Benzafar made short work of the chase hitting 50 not out from just 27 balls with 14 overs to spare.
It was a different story on Sunday with Sale 3rd XI losing by 78 runs at Alderley Edge, as the home side posted 228-2 with Archie Vaughan (son of Michael) top scoring with 67.
Sale openers James Dodds (31) and Theo Brodbeck (39) made a confident start adding 61 for the first wicket, but the middle order couldn’t capitalise as Sale were bowled out for 150 in the final over.
Sale 4th Xi suffered a similar fate at home to Ashley 3s after the visitors posted 180-9, Ryan Kelly taking 3-23. In reply Sale subsided to 77 all out, Joe Wicks top scoring with 21.
Earlier in the week Sale Silverbacks enjoyed an over 40s friendly against Bowdon. Ian Haberson (30 retired) and Hemant Sapkal (29) led the way as Sale posted 115-3 off 18 overs.
Rich Adams took both wickets as Bowdon reached 98 in reply.
On Saturday Sale 1st XI welcome Davenham to Dane Road and the 2nd XI visit Stockport Georgians. On Sunday the 3rd XI host Grappenhall, whilst the 4th XI make the short trip to Timperley.
