Sale have Leaders in a Spin
Sale 2nd XI upset Vivio Cheshire County League division one leaders Cheadle on Saturday and kept their own outside chance of promotion alive. Cheadle looked set for an imposing total before Sale spun their way to victory.
Cheadle opted to bat first against Search sponsored Sale, reaching 74-0 off 18 overs and looking to set a sizable total.
Captain Siyan Siraj then introduced himself and fellow spinner Grant Whittaker who turned the game dramatically in favour of the home team. Siraj taking 4-35 and Whittaker 4-33 as Cheadle were bowled out for 160 in the 48th over, Tom Riley cleaning up the tail with 2 wickets.
Sale reached their target with two overs to spare. Young opener Viraj Sorathia hit a calm 57 at the top of the order, with vital contributions of 34 from Dan Newton and 33 from skipper Siraj.
Sale 1st XI’s trip to Macclesfield reached a premature end as rain intervened with the game finely poised.
Opener Greg Gyves led the way for Sale with 91 at the top of the order, well supported by Tyrone Lawrence (44) and Chris Canning (40) as Sale closed on 259-8.
Sale looked to be ruing dropping Kalid Sawas as Macclesfield reached 78-1 off 21 overs when rain stopped play for the first time.
Richard Adams took two quick wickets after the resumption, before the rain returned at 118-3 with Sawas on 81 not out. No further play was possible, Sale picked up a valuable 11 points.
The 3rd XI looked well set for a vital win when rain curtailed their run chase at Oxton on Sunday. Sale bowled the home team out for 118 in the 41st over, Dan Newton (3-17) and Shah Zeb returning from injury (3-47) did the damage.
Sale had reached 52-3 in the 18th over when the rain arrived, Zikria Nadeem well placed on 23 not out.
The 4th XI had the better of their drawn match against Ashton-on-Mersey 3s. Chris Dyson hitting 58 and Howard Briggs 41 as Sale posted 186.
After tea the visitors batted out at 124-6, Joe Wicks leading bowler with 4-22.
Earlier in the week the Over 40s Silverbacks rounded off their season against Sale Under 18’s, with the “unders” retaining their trophy. Paul Hanrahan and Mark Rowe both retired on 30 as the Silverbacks posted 110.
Joe Cannon led his side to victory with 31 retired and 2-9, with Viraj Sorathia also retiring on 32.
Next week the 1st XI welcome Oxton to Dane Road and the 2nd XI play the reverse fixture. On Sunday the 3rd XI host Marple and the 4th XI visit Urmston.
