Shane Watson to lead injury-hit Royal Challengers Bangalore
Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson is all set to captain Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
The decision comes after regular skipper Virat Kohli has been sidelined with a shoulder injury that he sustained during the third Test against Australia in Ranchi.
Earlier, Bangalore head coach Daniel Vettori stated that AB de Villiers has been named as the standby skipper for Kohli but the Proteas star has now been ruled out of the encounter with a back injury that forced him to miss the final of the Momentum Cup for Titans.
"He still has some minor discomfort and we felt that couple of days off would be best before we have him back in action," said Vettori.
"We hope to see him on the field in good form by 8th April match against Delhi Daredevils."
Meanwhile, promising young talent Sarfaraz Khan is also doubtful for the tournament after he sustained a leg injury during a warm-up session on Monday.
Bangalore have already lost the services of Mitchell Starc and Lokesh Rahul due to their respective injuries and will be hoping to kick start their campaign with a win over the defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad.
