Indian opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has suffered a minor fracture of his left hand and will not take part in the third Test match against New Zealand in Indore.

Dhawan, who was hit on the hand by a Trent Boult delivery while batting in the second innings, sustained the injury to his left thumb which will now keep him out of action for up to 15 days.

The 30-year-old was taken to a hospital at the end of the third day to undergo an x-ray and did not take the field on the fourth day of the match at Eden Gardens.

Given the circumstances, Gautam Gambhir, who was drafted in place of the injured Lokesh Rahul, looks set to make his Test comeback in the third and final Test match which begins on 8th October.

India wrapped up the series with a 178-run victory in the second Test which gave them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against New Zealand.

The victory, which was India’s 11th in their last 12 home games, also helped them reclaim the number one position in the International Cricket Council Test Team rankings.
