Smith and Kohli to play together for Surrey?

Indian Captain Virat Kohli and former Australian skipper Steve Smith are known to not get along very well with each other. Following Smith’s brain fade moment last year when he tried to take help of the dressing room in a DRS decision, Kohli stopped just short of calling Smith a cheat.

Now, with Kohli keen on playing county cricket before India’s tour to England in July and Smith serving a 1-year ban from Cricket Australia, chances are rife that the two end up playing for Surrey.

Surrey head coach Michael Di Venuto stirred millions of cricket fans across the globe when he expressed his desire to rope in either Steve Smith or David Warner for the County season given that the England and Wales Cricket Board give a No Objection Certificate for the same.

Di Venuto has had a stint with Australian cricket as batting coach from 2013 to 2016. It was during this period that he worked closely with both Warner and Smith.

"From an Australian perspective, it is probably important that they play a bit of cricket at some stage. I don't know if they are allowed to play in this competition. I know what it states in their sanctions that they can't play domestic cricket in Australia.

If they are in the right mental state to play cricket and the ECB will have to allow it to start with, then we'd be mad not to look at some of the world's best players potentially playing," said the Surrey coach.

After Cricket Australia banned Smith and Warner for 1-year from international cricket, they are still eligible to play premiere cricket in Australia. At the same time, the effect of this ban is only in Australia which makes the duo free to feature in County cricket.

Also, Surrey have a spot to fill after the injury of Mitchell March and either of his compatriots can take his place. It is also noteworthy that Cameron Bancroft’s contract with Somerset was cancelled after he was suspended by CA.
