Australia have released leg-spinner Steve Smith from their Ashes squad, leaving the way open for left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty to make his debut in Brisbane.

"Cricket Australia's National Selection Panel today confirmed New South Wales leg spinner Steven Smith has been released from the Australian Test match squad," a statement confirmed.

"The squad will now remain at 13 until a final decision is made on Michael Clarke's availability for selection.

"Smith will be available for New South Wales' upcoming interstate matches against Western Australia in Perth."

Both Smith and Doherty, along with off-spinner Nathan Hauritz,  were named in an initial 17-man provisional squad, which was then trimmed to 13 players, before Usman Khawaja was then added as a standby player for Michael Clarke, who is an injury doubt due to his back problems.

The first Test against England gets underway in Brisbane at 00:00 GMT on 25th November.

Australia squad for first Test in Brisbane: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke (vice-captain), Doug Bollinger, Xavier Doherty, Brad Haddin, Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Marcus North, Peter Siddle, Usman Khawaja, Shane Watson
