If Australia are to go into the third Ashes Test at Perth with four quick bowlers, as could well be the case, then leg-spinner Steven Smith will be their number one spin-bowling option.
That would mean that uncapped left-arm slow bowler Michael Beer would miss out on selection with Australia poised instead to select Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus with Shane Watson as a fifth quick-bowling choice.
Smith has taken three wickets in two Test matches - both against Pakistan this summer in England - 41 wickets (at an average of 44.80) in 20 first-class matches for Australia, Australia A and New South Wales.
The third Test gets underway on 16th December with Australia 1-0 down in the five-match series.
