South Africa have called-up pace bowler Lungi Ngidi and middle-order batsman Khaya Zondo for the first three One-Day Internationals against India.

Ngidi, who recently made his Test debut against the same opposition came up with an impressive seven-wicket performance that saw him claim the man of the match award. He has also played three Twenty20 Internationals and has six scalps at an economy of 5.50.

Meanwhile, Zondo was part of the 2015 touring squad of South Africa for the series against India but failed to get any game despite JP Duminy was injured midway which created a bit of controversy.

Farhaan Behardien was the surprise exclusion from the squad and chief selector Linda Zondi insisted that they want to use the upcoming series to look at the potential of the new players with the 2019 World Cup in mind.

"We are starting our vision 2019: which are the players we are looking for and the roles we are looking at? There are key players that have done well in the franchise level.

"(Zondo) has done well at franchise level for four years. We basically know what he can offer.

"It is important for us to increase that pool and give opportunity so that we know by the time it comes to late this year, we don't have to be clouded by certain players that we feel they deserve a chance. This is a holistic approach in terms of giving opportunity".

Senior fast bowler Morne Morkel and all-rounder Chris Morris also make a return to the squad while Dale Steyn is unavailable as he continues his rehabilitation.

"For now, the main focus is let's see how Dale Steyn does in the Tests, and then he needs to go back to the franchise and see where he is with the white ball.

"I am quite comfortable with the manner that he performed when he came back. This is a different injury but I am very optimistic. He is part and parcel of this vision. Do we go with Dale Steyn, do we go with Lungi?"

The first three ODIs will be played in Durban, Centurion and Cape Town on 1st, 4th and 7th February.
