Lancashire recovered well from being 59-5 to close the day on 297-9, mainly thanks to Jordan Clark (79) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (58). The tail also wagged with Graham Onions(41) and Tom Bailey (36*) still there. Sam Cook (3-65) was the pick of the Essex bowlers, who should count themselves unlucky not to be in a better position at the close of play on day one of this 4 day game.

There was a masterclass in batting and bowling today from Matthew Renshaw for Somerset who scored 106 and spinner Matthew Carter for Nottinghamshire who took 4- 81 off 27 overs. Somerset captain Tom Abell (57) and wicket keeper Steve Davies (59) also chipped in with some runs.
